In 1923, Walter Percy Chrysler was recruited by bankers to take over the running of the Maxwell Motor Corporation, which had merged with Chalmers and was in trouble. Walter Chrysler had previously been engaged to take over the Willys automobile business where he was impressed by a Willys Six car that was under development (see Willys). Chrysler recruited the designers of the proposed Willys Six to continue to develop their car and installed them in the Chalmers plant in Detroit, where the Chalmers car was being phased out. The car was introduced at the Commodore Hotel in New York City in January 1924 as the Chrysler Six. It was a high performance, stylish, medium priced car, which was immediately successful and 32,000 had been sold by the end of the year, an industry record for first year sales.
The Chrysler Corporation was established and a new four-cylinder car introduced in 1925 and a luxury Imperial Six was added to the range in 1927. The Imperial was the name used for Chrysler's top-of-the-line product. By 1927 Chrysler was America's fourth highest selling automobile company. In 1928 Chrysler bought out Dodge and Fargo trucks, introduced the Plymouth and the De Soto, and became the third largest producer in America. Chrysler introduced the aerodynamically designed Airflow in 1934, which was a disaster. In 1937 Chrysler became conventionally styled again.
Chrysler strengthened its business again after World War II. The Chrysler Imperial remained Chrysler's prestige car line, although in 1955 the Imperial became a separate make.
Chrysler suffered badly in the 1970's. The company was returned to profit in the 1980's and acquired American Motors in 1987. But, along with General Motors, Chrysler suffered loss of business in the 1990's. Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz in 1998 but was resold and became Chrysler Group LLC in 2007. Chrysler filed for bankruptcy in April 2009 and is now (as of 2013) a subsidiary company of Fiat of Italy.

The only commercial vehicles offered using the Chrysler name were 1/2-ton and 3/4-ton vans for export only between 1925 and 1928, and in 1926 a Chrysler taxicab was offered by a Paris company. In 1958 Chrysler built some amphibious trucks for the US Army and in the 1990's a series of Chrysler minivans was introduced. Several Chrysler companies, including Dodge, Fargo, Plymouth and De Soto produced a wide range of trucks and other commercial vehicles.
Emblems
The blue and white Chrysler Six radiator emblem shown above at the top of this post is a genuine, original emblem and is ultra rare.
It is believed that this was a trial emblem made before the decision to go with the iconic Chrysler seal design and may have been used on the early prototype Chrysler Six cars made before the final production model was introduced in January 1924.
The now famous Chrysler seal emblem used on the first production Chrysler models was designed by Oliver Clark, who also designed the winged Viking helmet radiator cap used on early Chrysler cars, see example below:
The Chrysler wax seal and ribbon logo is reputed to indicate a "seal of approval" or "seal of quality" and the lightning bolts within the seal design represent stylized "Zs" in tribute to Fred Zeder, who was chief engineer at Chrysler and largely responsible for the design of the original Chrysler Model B-70.

The Chrysler Eight emblem shown below is an extremely rare mystery. It is finished in blue enamel and has an unusual but distinctive design. I have been unable to identify when or how this Chrysler emblem was used. It is reminiscent of the late 1930's in style and has the same form of the "Chrysler" lettering and the same single vertical and three horizontal line design as found on the painted, circular banjo steering wheel button emblem used by Chrysler in 1937. This suggests a 1937 or 1938 date for this unusual enamel finished Chrysler emblem. If you have any further information about this emblem, please let me know in order to update this post.
